1M2030 Story #7: My Own Bag: Empowering Women - By Siya Tayal

Hi, my name is Siya Tayal and I am one in a million. This is my cause.

I started an initiative ‘My Own Bag’ five years ago under my social work umbrella Bee Nifty. My own bag is an initiative where we sell bags to save the environment while providing income.

Waste unused and new fabrics are collected and with the help of my wonderful production team we turn them into compact reusable and durable bags.

We have now sold over 1700 bags with so many people supporting us.

I have convinced some families in rural Haryana to allow their daughters and wives to work in their free time and make bags for us.

Three young girls, Priya Kumar, (18), Pooja Kumar, (18) and Ritika Kumar (18), work after school to produce these effective, strong bags from which they pay their own school fees.

I sell these bags at my school open-day with aim to:

1. reduce plastic bag usage

2. reduce unemployment in Haryana and enforce the fact that women have the right to work

3. re-use waste material and prevent burning of cloth (which is hazardous to the environment) and  reduce landfill waste 5. encourage the concept of recycling

All profits collected from Bee Nifty have been forwarded to various charities through school.

1700 plus bags have been sold so far. www.beeniftybags.com is my website and I launched it during lockdown
